World Cup 2026 Overview

The first World Cup to feature 48 teams across three host nations

Host Countries

For the first time in history, three nations will co-host the tournament: Canada, Mexico, and the United States. This marks Mexico's third time hosting (after 1970 and 1986), the USA's second (after 1994), and Canada's first.

Expanded Format

The tournament will expand from 32 to 48 teams, divided into 16 groups of 3 teams each. The top two teams from each group advance to a new 32-team knockout stage, increasing the total number of matches from 64 to 80.

Tournament Dates

Scheduled from June 11 to July 19, 2026. The opening match will be played at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, while the final will take place at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, USA.

Defending Champions

Argentina enters as defending champions after their thrilling victory over France in the 2022 final. Lionel Messi lifted the trophy in what was likely his final World Cup appearance.
